We are strongly aware that the costumes in music videos are very important. From our group discussions we know what kind of feel we want to go for, and the moodboards that we created earlier also help us. In our target market feedback of our anamatic storyboard we asked how many outfits they would like to see per scene/location. They described to us that they wouldnt like to see too many as it would just look confusing, but definitly a different look per location. We know the styles of clothing that we are after for some of the scenes however to ensure we get each and every detail correct I'm going to look at some similar existing music videos to see what is worn in them.
Avril Lavigne
In the video 'What the hell', Avril wears 3 different outfits, one for the opening, one for the performance, and one for the narrative (see pic to the left). The outfit she wears for the narrative is very casual, but still glam (you wouldn't see her in trackies in a music video). The top that she is wearing is very baggy, but still rock chic, so her character is personified through her clothing. She is wearing one small piece of jewellery which isnt too dressy, but does still add to the overall look. We have 3 narrative scenes in our video, and we feel that the baggy teeshirt and necklace look is one that would suit our song and also one that would suit our actress. Kelly Clarkson
This screen shot comes from Clarkson's 'My life would suck without you'. This is her performance, black screen, and from previous research we have found that performance outfits are a lot more glamorous and more dressed up. Kelly Clarkson is wearing a long vintage grey vest top, and a suede-leather jacket. To make this look more dressy, she is wearing black, wet look leggings which are very glamorous. Also, to accessorise this look, Kelly is wearing a pendant/long metalkic necklace, this draws our attention down the body and also looks elegant. Her eye makeup matches the style of her outfit, she has smoky eyes which looks efforless and stunning simultaneuosly. Our performance is going to be on a black screen aswell, however because our song is less mainstream, and more rock chic we will experiment with using reds and blues on our actress. Katy Perry
Katy Perry is wearing a typical rock chic/edgy look. The lave dress and leather jacket. The texture of the lace dress works really well with the glossy finish of the jacket. This look would be suited more to a performance scene as, with accessories including a necklace and belt, it looks elegant and chic enough. The studs on her leather jacket suggest a sharp masculine personality, however the lace dress beneath connotes more of a girly style. Overall, this outfit displays a balanced personality, and also it displays a descent amount to flesh (and not too much). This allows her male audience to maintain interest, and her female audience something to aspire to.In our music video we will have 3 types of scene: Dressy, Casual and a Casual-Dressy, these will be for the performance scene, narratives, and the out side narrative scenes respectively. We collected all of the clothes that we had access to, which we felt would be well suited to each scene. We mixed and matched items untill we found what we were after.
These are some of the casual looks that we came up with:

There are 3 narrative scenes, and for each of them we need a different casual outfits and from looking at these combinations and others that we went through we have decided on what we wish for her to be dressed in.
Pub:
-Fleetwood Mac beige t-shirt (as seen in top middle),
-Brown treggins
-Leather jacket (as seen in bottom right)
-Small, quirky mushroom necklace
-Gold bow stud earings
-Makeup: natural with brown eyeshadow
-Hair:natural, down, straight
Sofa:
-Nivarna grey t-shirt
-Light blue jeggins
-Quirky cupcake socks
-Small dice studs
-Makeup: natural, purple eyeshadow
-Hair: loosely bobbled
Kitchen:
-Brown chiffon blouse
-Dark skinny jeans
-Black strappy top
-Small stud earings
-Makeup: natural, brown eyeliner
-Hair: tied up
The outside performance scene is scene will be filmed at New Walke. This outfit needed to be flirty, fun, and a mix between dressed up and casual. We decided not to have a totally glamorous look on this scene as we felt that our artist/actress would look odd and out of place walking down a street dressed up in the middle of the day.
Outside performance:
-Black leggins
-Peach, floaty strappy vest
-Studded leather jacket
-Feather earings
-Black sequined heels
-Makeup: glam-black, smokey eyes, mascara, blusher, clear lipgloss
-Hair: volumed, big, wavey hair
The performance scene needs to be the most prominent and most glamorous out of all of them. The outfit that we have decided on for this scene is similar to Katy Perry's outfit above. We decided that the lace dress would work really well connoting the girly side to our actress, and the heavy makeup would contradict this and suggest a more moody attitude. We have decided on:
Performance:
-Red lace dress (long sleeved, short dress)
-Black sequined heels
-Gold eye necklace
-Gold earing
-Chain bracelet/ring
-Makeup:heavy smokey eyes, blusher, mascara, liploss
-Hair: Volumised, straight, whispy
